Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the importance of speeding up Covid-19 vaccinations on Tuesday, as the country experienced its greatest daily death toll since the outbreak began.

Putin urged newly elected members of Russia's lower legislative house, the State Duma, to persuade the Russian populace to get vaccinated as the situation continues to worsen across the enormous country.

Despite being the first country in the world to approve a coronavirus vaccine, Sputnik V, for use in August 2020, Russia has lagged behind much of the rest of the globe in getting its population immunized.

Putin's instruction came on the same day that Russia recorded 973 Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, the largest number of deaths in the country since the pandemic began.

For the seventh day in a row, Russia has recorded over 900 deaths. According to Russia's coronavirus task group, the government has officially documented 218,345 coronavirus deaths, the greatest number in Europe.
