Carlos Yulo makes history, claims vault gold, parallel bars silver at world championships

Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo become the first ever Filipino to win multiple medals in the world championships, claiming the gold in the men’s vault category and silver in the men’s parallel bars competition at the 2021 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan.

The 21-year old gymnast shows an astounding performance by delivering a nearly perfect attempt of a Kasamatsu double twist and a Dragulescu, which is considered as one of the hardest elements on vault. His total score of 14.916 gives him an edge and bested seven other athletes earning him the second gold medal in his history of competing in the world championship.

After winning the gold medal, Carlos Yulo grabbed a silver medal in the parallel bar final with a score of 15.300, a bit shy with the score of China’s Hu Xuwei who earned a score of 15.466. Although the Filipino gymnast didn’t earn another gold medal, he still set the record for the first ever Filipino gymnast to capture multiple world championship medals in a single staging of the tournament.

In the Tokyo games, Yulo only qualified for the men’s vault final and did not join the podium finish. But in 2019, Yulo also made another history after capturing the Philippines’ first ever gold in the world championship. A year before that, he took home the bronze medal in the same event.
